Храм построен в честь бога Хора, однако в силу некоторых особенностей культа первоначально считалось, что божество имеет местное происхождение. Город Эдфу (Эджбо) во II номе Верхнего Египта упоминается под названием Бехдет в текстах времён Среднего царства и позднее; в текстах самого храма бог фигурирует под именем Хор Бехдетский.

The temple was built in honor of the god Horus, however, due to some features of the cult, it was initially believed that the deity was of local origin. The city of Edfu (Ejbo) in Nome II of Upper Egypt is mentioned under the name Bekhdet in texts from the Middle Kingdom and later; in the texts of the temple itself, the god appears under the name Khor Bekhdetsky.
