⚓️ Blizzard in Duluth Forces Great Lakes Ship to Stop

A powerful blizzard in Duluth, Minnesota forced Great Lakes shipping plans to stop as whiteout conditions, strong winds, and blowing snow made departure unsafe. This video shows the blizzard up close from the north pier and also captures the ship departing once conditions improved, clearly showing how extreme winter weather directly impacts Great Lakes shipping decisions, even when a ship is fully loaded and ready to sail.

On December 28, 2025, a major winter storm hit Duluth and much of Minnesota, producing wind gusts above 40 mph along with intense blowing snow and near zero visibility. I recorded from the north pier near the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge as the storm overwhelmed the harbor, showing exactly what conditions looked like on the ground. The James L. Oberstar was fully loaded with iron ore pellets and could have departed immediately, but it was confirmed to me personally by a mate aboard the ship that the captain chose to wait out the blizzard due to the dangerous conditions.

On December 29, 2025, weather conditions improved, allowing the James L. Oberstar to safely depart Duluth in calmer but bitterly cold conditions. As the ship passed through the canal, it sounded a horn salute and the bridge returned the salute before the vessel headed out onto Lake Superior on its way to Indiana Harbor to offload its cargo. The same storm generated massive waves and powerful wind gusts on the open lake, nearly hurricane like in the middle of Lake Superior, reinforcing why waiting for better conditions was the right decision.
