A Memorial To Miners In Kazakhstan

This memorial is in a park in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, which was a major producer of coal during the existence of the Soviet Union and continues to be a significant producer of coal today... During the late 1930s, up to half of the population of Karaganda were prisoners. Can you imagine how grim it must have been to have been caught up in one of the Stalinist purges and sent to a Soviet forced labor camp mining coal in the 1930s?

Although it doesn't describe Karaganda or even Kazakhstan, one of the best books I have read on the Soviet forced labor camps is the memoir by Janusz Bardach, Man Is Wolf to Man: Surviving the Gulag.

I've been to Kazakhstan many times now and it remains my favorite country in Central Asia. Renting a car (preferably a Russian 4WD) or taking the train are the best ways that I have found to get around Kazakhstan.
