China Builds 250-Hectare Military Site in Aksai Chin Just 65km From LAC — Satellite Images Reveal

Satellite imagery has revealed a sprawling Chinese military site covering more than two hundred and fifty hectares in occupied Aksai Chin, located just sixty-five kilometres from the Line of Actual Control. The site, first reported by Open Intel in August 2023 and now confirmed through the latest available imagery, shows active tunnel construction underway with visible reinforcement work being carried out deep inside the mountain.

The Aksai Chin site is only one piece of a far larger and more alarming picture. Approximately seventy kilometres south lies Pangong Lake, around which China has been constructing multiple military facilities including a motorable road. A further four hundred kilometres south, a new dual-use Chinese airbase has been built close to the holy Mansarovar Lake. The India Today Open Source Intelligence Team, using publicly available satellite imagery, official Chinese government documents and geolocated footage, has now mapped at least ninety new Chinese infrastructure projects in the Himalayas that have emerged since 2020, the year of the deadly Galwan clashes between Indian and Chinese forces.

These ninety verified projects include twenty-seven air assets, seventeen railway assets, thirty-three tunnels and thirteen new water infrastructure projects, collectively representing one of the most extensive military and strategic buildups ever documented in the Himalayan region.
