Kazakhstan has reached a historic conservation milestone by releasing Umit, a female Amur tiger, into the Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve as part of an ambitious project to restore the extinct Caspian tiger population in Central Asia.

The release marks the beginning of a long-term reintroduction program that has been in preparation for over a decade. Officials say Amur tigers are the closest living relatives of the extinct Caspian tiger, making them suitable for restoring the region's ecosystem.

The project aims to rebuild a sustainable tiger population over the next 25 years, with three more Amur tigers expected to be released after scientists assess Umit's adaptation to the wild.
