Welcome to the Mponeng Gold Mine — the deepest mine in the world. ⛏️????

Located near Carletonville in South Africa’s West Rand, about 90 km southwest of Johannesburg, Mponeng is an extraordinary example of ultra-deep underground mining.

Current mining takes place at depths of approximately 3,160 to 3,740 metres below the surface — deep enough for underground heat, enormous rock pressure and seismic activity to become major engineering challenges.

In this video, we explore:

⛏️ Why Mponeng is considered the deepest mine in the world
???? The geology behind South Africa’s legendary gold deposits
????️ How miners travel kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface
???? The enormous shaft and underground tunnel system
???? How gold-bearing rock is drilled and blasted deep underground
???? The Ventersdorp Contact Reef targeted by the mine
????️ How ventilation and cooling make ultra-deep mining possible
⚠️ How engineers manage extreme rock pressure and seismic events
???? How ore travels from deep underground back to the surface
⚙️ How the extracted ore is processed to recover gold
???? Why South Africa became one of the most important gold-mining regions in history
????️ How Mponeng is being expanded to extend its operating life

Gold production from the Mponeng orebody began in 1986.

Today, the mine is owned and operated by Harmony Gold Mining Company, which acquired Mponeng from AngloGold Ashanti in 2020.

The mine primarily extracts gold from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef, part of the extraordinary geological system that has made the Witwatersrand region famous around the world.

But mining at these depths is unlike conventional underground mining.

As miners descend deeper into the Earth, temperatures and rock stresses increase dramatically.

Massive ventilation and cooling systems are therefore essential to create workable underground conditions.

At the same time, the tremendous pressure inside the surrounding rock creates another challenge — mining-induced seismic activity.

Engineers must continuously monitor underground conditions, manage rock stress and design support systems capable of protecting workers and infrastructure thousands of metres below the surface.

Getting miners to the workplace is itself an engineering achievement.

Workers descend through a system of main and sub-shafts, travelling deep beneath the surface before reaching underground working areas.

From there, crews drill into the gold-bearing reef, explosives break the rock, and the fragmented ore begins a long journey back toward the surface for processing.

Despite operating for decades, Mponeng still has a significant future.

Harmony approved a major life-of-mine extension project in 2024, with development underway to access additional resources and extend mining for many more years.

In FY2025 alone, Mponeng produced more than 333,000 ounces of gold, demonstrating the continuing importance of this extraordinary underground operation.

Few mines on Earth push engineering and human capability to such extremes.

At Mponeng, miners work more than three and a half kilometres beneath South Africa, surrounded by immense geological pressure and connected to the surface through a highly engineered network of shafts, tunnels, ventilation systems and ore-handling infrastructure.

This is not simply another underground gold mine.

This is Mponeng — the deepest mine in the world, and one of mining engineering’s most extraordinary achievements.
